Goddess of Spectacles What I'm Reading
Andrew Bain, Headwinds: A Book with Trucks, Thieving Marsupials & Unnecessary Exercise. South Yarra, Vic., Australia: Hardie Grant Books, 2003. With a minimum of training and preparation, the author and his partner set out to cycle the 20,000 kilometers of Australian coast. I've read only as far as their first night camping beside the highway, the author awaking to wonder why he had ever thought he could do such a thing. Hoping his partner would declare her intention to give up the crazy idea, he was disappointed when she awoke ready to carry forward with their adventure.
Hicks, Esther and Jerry, Manifest Your Desires: 365 Ways to Make Your Dreams a Reality. Hay House, 2008. I am fascinated with the Hicks's series on the power of desire and focused thought. This little collection is composed of 365 short paragraphs (presumably to be read one a day for a year) that contain nuggets from their chest of self-help treasures. It is a sort of bedtime devotional or early-morning bite of inspiration.
Bruce Moore, Speaking Our Language: The Story of Australian English. South Melbourne, Vic., Australia: Oxford University Press, 2008. I've lived in Australia for about seven and a half years now, and I continue to be fascinated with the language and the culture. Slang is not the only area where Australians have invented words; there are many that emerged from the nature of the land and the people who settled it. Several hundred words come from indigenous languages, a function of the many animals and plants that early settlers had never heard of, much less seen. Moore does a good job of holding my interest on a topic that could easily become immersed in academic dryness.

Goddess of Spectacles What I've Wred*

*I am adopting the spelling of a friend, whose creative genius with things mechanical lends exciting artistry to his spelling and a long-needed distinction between past and present tenses of the verb read. Thanks for that, Mac.

The following are primarily books I have wred since 1994, the year I enrolled at Vermont College in Montpelier, Vermont. The experience of completing my bachelor's degree as an adult learner at Vermont College has forever changed the way I read. I continue to take far too many notes and never fail to record the page number of any well-written phrase that I may someday wish to quote. CLICK ON THE TITLE TO READ THE REVIEW.
